Overview

The Graduate Scholar Success Fund was established with the goal of supporting first-generation students who are facing urgent financial need. This emergency funding aims to reduce financial stress and foster success amongst first-generation students at UC Irvine.

Award Information

Schools may submit proposals for funding up to $9,500 for a graduate student in need, provided they can match the requested amount.

School Submission Deadline:  Nominations will be evaluated on a rolling basis

Eligibility Criteria

Nominee Qualifications

  1. Have a minimum graduate-level UCI GPA of 3.7
  2. Demonstrate a strong academic record
  3. Demonstrate financial need – this could be due to an unexpected gap in funding, life events, etc.
  4. Be a first-generation college student (doctoral or MFA), with neither parent having received a four-year degree

For Schools

  1. Agree to match the amount requested
  2. One nomination per school  may be submitted for consideration at a time

Nomination Process

Nominations should be submitted by the School’s Associate Dean and must include:

  1. A description of the nominee’s current funding for the 2024-5 academic year
  2. An explanation of the need for funding, the proposed funding amount, and funding period, etc.
  3. The nominee’s current curriculum vitae
  4. A letter of recommendation from the faculty advisor/mentor which highlights the nominee’s academic strength
  5. confirmation of matching funds from School Associate Dean

 

Completed nominations may be sent to fellowships@rgs.uci.edu (CC tdahl@uci.edu) for consideration.  Since available funding is limited, only one proposal per school will be considered at a time.

Stipulations

  • Students should review the Terms and Conditions to ensure that they are eligible to receive fellowship or scholarship funding before applying.
  • For students already receiving financial aid, acceptance of additional funding may affect their overall financial need-based support package. In such cases, students are strongly encouraged to consult with the UCI Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.
