Overview

The Katherine and Robert Phalen Endowment is intended to highlight and support doctoral students whose current laboratory research shows future promise for preventing, treating, or understanding human disease.

Award Information

$1,000 award to be used as a stipend for Spring 2024. Doctoral students from the Program in Public Health and the School of Medicine are eligible to apply directly for this fellowship.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Have a minimum graduate-level UCI GPA of 3.7 (at least 3 quarters of graduate coursework completed at UCI)
  2. Be a current, full-time doctoral student enrolled in either the Program in Public Health or the School of Medicine
  3. Demonstrate financial need
  4. Involved in laboratory research that shows future promise for preventing, treating or understanding human diseases

Nomination Process

Submit an application using the Katherine and Robert Phalen Endowment – Application Form.  Be prepared to provide the following information:

  • Financial Need & Impact Statement (300 word maximum)
    • Description of your financial need and how this fellowship would be utilized (300 word maximum)
  • Research Statement (500 word maximum)
    • Description of your laboratory research and how it shows future promise for preventing, treating or understanding human diseases
  • A current Curriculum Vitae
  • Letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor/mentor
    • Letters may be confidentially submitted using the Letter of Recommendation Upload Form
    • Letters should address the following:
      • Applicant’s role and direct contributions to their laboratory research
      • Applicant’s academic qualifications & noteworthy qualities and characteristics
    • Letter should not address:
      • The applicant’s financial need or personal circumstances
