Fellowship details

This award honors Dr. Jim Trolinger's pioneering contributions to physics, optics, and space science by supporting graduate students who demonstrate exceptional talent, curiosity, and achievement in scientific research. Inspired by his groundbreaking work in holography, microgravity science, and aerospace applications, the fellowship aims to foster innovative thinkers who seek to advance their academic fields of study.
One fellow will be selected to receive a $10,000 stipend to be used during the 2025-26 academic year.
- Have a minimum graduate-level UCI GPA of 3.7 (at least 3 quarters of graduate coursework completed at UCI)
- Must satisfy the minimum eligibility criteria for fellowships
- Be a current, full-time student enrolled in a graduate program in Physics, Engineering, or a related field of study
Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate innovative laboratory research and direct contributions, such as novel experimental designs, unique technological applications, or field advancements, evidenced by publications, presentations, or advisor endorsements.

- Student Profile
- Please provide a brief biographic student profile of less than 300 words. Include, where applicable, undergraduate university and previous degrees, research interests, current projects, honors, work experience, outside interests, and any special characteristics or activities.
- Research Statement
- Provide a statement (under 500 words) describing your research project, written for a committee of non-specialists. Highlight any innovative laboratory research and your direct contributions, such as novel experimental designs, unique technological applications, or field advancements, supported by evidence like publications, presentations, or advisor endorsements
- A current Curriculum Vitae
- Letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor/mentor
- Letters may be submitted in the application or confidentially by the recommender via the upload form
- Letters should address:
- Applicant’s role and direct contributions to their laboratory research
- Applicant’s academic qualifications & noteworthy qualities and characteristics

- For students already receiving financial aid, acceptance of additional funding may affect their overall financial need-based support package. In such cases, students are strongly encouraged to consult with the UCI Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.
