Overview

The Graduate Scholar Success Fund was established with the goal of supporting first-generation students who are facing urgent financial need. This emergency funding aims to reduce financial stress and foster success amongst first-generation students at UC Irvine.

Award Information

Fellowship awards consist of a $1,000 stipend and are intended for situations where the funds are intended for immediate use (current quarter).

Important Dates

Applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted throughout Winter quarter 2026.

Eligibility Criteria

Nominee Qualifications

  1. Have a minimum graduate-level UCI GPA of 3.7
  2. Must satisfy the minimum eligibility criteria for fellowships
  3. Demonstrate a strong academic record
  4. Demonstrate financial need – this could be due to an unexpected gap in funding, life events, etc.
  5. Be a first-generation college student (doctoral or MFA), with neither parent having received a four-year degree

Application Process

Students may apply direct.  Be prepared to provide the following:

  1. Student Profile (300 words or less)
    Provide a brief biographic student profile of less than 300 words. Include, where applicable, undergraduate university and previous degrees, research interests, current projects, honors, work experience, outside interests, and any special characteristics or activities.
  2. Research Statement (300 words or less)
    Provide a statement describing your research project, written for a committee of non-specialists.
  3. Description of Current Funding
    Provide a brief description of your funding for the remainder of this academic year including employment, fellowships, grants, etc.  Please also include any other funding that you are currently pursuing.
  4. Explanation for Funding Request
    This fellowship is intended for graduate students facing urgent, often unexpected, financial need.  It’s aim is to reduce financial stress and foster success among first-generation students at UC Irvine.  Provide a brief explanation of your need and include how you will use these funds.
  5. Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Stipulations

  • Students should review the Terms and Conditions to ensure that they are eligible to receive fellowship or scholarship funding before applying.
  • For students already receiving financial aid, acceptance of additional funding may affect their overall financial need-based support package. In such cases, students are strongly encouraged to consult with the UCI Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.
