About Dean Smith
Jaymi Lee Smith was named the fourth Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate Division on an interim basis on July 1, 2024. Smith took over for Dean Gillian Hayes. Frances M. Leslie and Carolyn Boyd served as the division’s second and first deans, respectively.

Jaymi Lee Smith
A member of the UCI faculty since 2007, Professor Smith joined the Graduate Division as Associate Dean in 2021. She has participated in the Provost’s Leadership Academy and served as an equity advisor for the Claire Trevor School of the Arts and as a member of the Graduate Council. Previously, she taught classes at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Associated Colleges of the Midwest and The Theatre School at DePaul University.
In addition, Professor Smith has spent more than 30 years of her career managing theater, event, and architectural lighting design across the United States, China, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Spain. A member of United Scenic Artists, her designs have been used at theaters including South Coast Repertory, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Pasadena Playhouse, and La Jolla Playhouse. Production highlights include six seasons at the Utah Shakespeare Festival and three productions at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
