Eugene Cota-Robles Fellowship
Fellowship details

The Eugene Cota-Robles (ECR) Fellowship is the most prestigious fellowship offered at UC Irvine. This award is used to release recipients from employment or loan obligations that might delay progress in graduate study. The fellowship is designed to place students interested in careers in academic teaching and research on a fast track towards completing their doctoral degree, and to increase the number of qualified candidates for University of California faculty positions. The Eugene Cota-Robles Fellowship is named in honor of one of the earliest Mexican American professors in the University of California system.
The Graduate Division will provide:
- Fellowship stipend for 9 months in the amount of $42,000 for Year 1 and Year 5
- (Year 5 fellowship is contingent upon good academic standing & advancement to candidacy)
- Student Fees
- Non-Resident Supplemental Tuition (NRST) if the student is a non-resident of California
- One summer stipend of $6,000 (after Year 3)
- $1,000 professional development stipend after Year 1

The department/school will be required to support the following:
- Provide a minimum of $6K stipend for two summers (after Year 2 and Year 4)
- Guarantee support during non-fellowship years at normative levels (Years 2-4)
Funding levels listed above apply to incoming Fall 2025 fellows.

- Awardee must indicate an interest in an academic career in teaching and research.
- Awardee must be admitted to a doctoral program at UCI.
- Awardee may not have ever been or currently enrolled in a doctoral program at UCI.
- Awardee must demonstrate high potential and promise.
- Awardee must be a United States citizen, permanent resident, or AB540 eligible
- Awardee needs to be interviewed by the admission committee.
- Awardee must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative undergraduate and master’s (if applicable) GPA.
- Awardee must have a pending SIR at the time of nomination.
- Awardee must meet the UC definition of diversity.
