Eligibility Criteria

Note: The Graduate Division will no longer be collecting nominations on behalf of the campus.

  1. Open competition –  the 2024 Gilliam competition will move to an open competition. Any eligible adviser-student pair (see program announcement for detailed eligibility guidelines) can apply. There is no nomination process, and there is not a limit (slot number) for each institution. Faculty advisers will continue to serve as the lead applicant, and once the application opens on October 19, they can start a new application from HHMI’s Pathway system.
  2. Eligibility – the 2024 competition will be open to graduate students and advisers of all identities.  A primary goal of Gilliam is to promote creation of equitable, inclusive, and healthy scientific research environments where everyone can learn, contribute, and thrive. Successful applicants (adviser and student) will demonstrate their commitment to this goal through their activities and unique experiences.
  3. Application components – Campus nominators will no longer submit letters or institutional data as part of the Gilliam application. All application materials will be prepared and submitted by the adviser, the graduate student, and one outside letter writer on behalf of the student.
