Graduate Division Completion Fellowships
This is one quarter of support for those who were affected by the events of the past 12 months and are now out of funding. The goal is to help those whose research or creative activities were held up as a result of the pandemic or other events in 2020 and early 2021. We will give priority to those who have a matching quarter of additional support from their school -- if more than one quarter is needed. Students can also plan to combine the fellowship quarter with an additional quarter during which they can go on filing-fee status -- for up to three quarters of work leading to the completion of the degree. The criteria are as follows:
- If you are out of funding that would cover the cost of a quarter, you may apply for one quarter from Graduate Division.
- Applicants must specify how their research or other required work was delayed. Applicants may also provide information about how events affected them, although details are not required.
- A letter of support and any matching funds available from their associate dean, chair, or adviser.
- Applicants must submit a timeline for completion of the degree.
Deadline: February 26, 2021

Cascade Mentoring Program in Social Sciences and Humanities
Prof. Barbara Sarnecka in Social Sciences has developed a model of cascading graduate mentorship, where students in each year of a graduate program are mentored by people ahead of them (including faculty, postdocs and more advanced grad students) while simultaneously serving as mentors to people behind them (including less advanced graduate students and undergraduates.) Starting in Spring 2021, Grad Division will offer a Cascade Mentoring Certificate for advanced graduate students in the Humanities or Social Sciences who complete the Cascade Mentoring course (SOC SCI 289) with Prof. Sarnecka and fulfill all associated requirements. Starting in Summer 2021, students who have earned the certificate will be eligible to apply for one of twenty Cascade Mentoring Fellowships, which provide a stipend of $1,500 per quarter to lead a mentoring group for 5-8 graduate students.

Stipends received through grants such as this may affect need-based awards obtained through the UCI Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. In such cases, Financial Aid awards may be adjusted to account for the total amount of support received from all university sources. It is your responsibility to speak to the financial aid office to see if you will be affected before accepting the funds.
All students are required by the IRS to report stipend payments not used for fees, books, supplies or equipment required for courses as income for tax purposes. UCI does not provide United States citizen or permanent resident students with an end of the year statement of fellowship income, comparable to the W-2, for reporting employment income. Students must keep their own records of all their financial documents for tax purposes.
The UCI Graduate Dean reserves the final right in determining a student's eligibility for UCI grants and fellowships. All decisions made by the UCI Graduate Dean are final.
