Chris is the Managing Partner at Second Wave Capital Management, a privately-held, entrepreneurial investment firm focused on high-growth, high-quality companies based in Seal Beach, California. He previously served as COO and CFO for 123 Home Care, a Bay View portfolio company. Prior to launching his firm, Chris accumulated fifteen years of experience in the neurosciences, including research fellowships with the University of California and the American Heart and Stroke Association. Chris holds a BS in Biology from the College of Idaho, a PhD in Neurobiology from UC Irvine, and an MBA from USC. He is the recipient of a University of California Distinguished Fellowship in Neurobiology, an American Heart Association Fellowship in Cerebrovascular Disease, and is a UC Irvine Public Impact Fellow.

INTERATIONAL STUDENTS - SEATS AVAILABLE FOR TASTE OF AMERICA DINNERS
The Taste of America Program provides the opportunity for local residents to open their homes to international graduate students for cross cultural exchange. The goal of the program is to ease international graduate students’ adjustment into UCI, learn about American customs and traditions, and develop connections within our community over dinner.
There are a few more seats available for dinners in Novembers across a variety of dates - Will you be staying locally during Thanksgiving? Are you available after class for dinner? Dinners have started, but we still encourage international students to apply if interested. This unique experience to connect with local residents. Complete the online application. We would like to inform you that the Chateaubriand Fellowship call for applications for 2019-2020 academic year is now open. This fellowship offered by the Embassy of France in the United States allows PhD students enrolled in American universities to conduct research in France for 4-9 months. We believe that this fellowship may interest colleagues in your university or graduate school who have or would like to initiate collaborations with French researchers.
Candidates must be currently working on their Ph.D.
Candidates do not have to be U.S. citizens, but they must be enrolled in an American university.
Candidates must obtain a letter of recommendation from their advisor(s) in the U.S., as well as a letter of invitation from a professor affiliated with a French university or research institution. Please contact your supervisor in France as early as possible.

CHARLOTTE W. NEWCOMBE DOCTORAL DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
“The Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships are designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences, and particularly to help Ph.D. candidates in these fields complete their dissertation work in a timely manner. In addition to topics in religious studies or in ethics (philosophical or religious), dissertations appropriate to the Newcombe Fellowship competition might explore the ethical implications of foreign policy, the values influencing political decisions, the moral codes of other cultures, and religious or ethical issues reflected in history or literature.
Since the first round of competition in 1981, more than 1,200 Newcombe Fellows have been named. Fellows from early years of the program are now senior faculty members at major research universities and selective liberal arts colleges, curators and directors at significant scholarly archives, and leaders and policymakers at nonprofit organizations and in cabinet-level government agencies. In the past decade, national honors such as the MacArthur Fellowship, Pulitzer Prize in History, the Guggenheim Fellowship, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences have been accorded to more than a dozen Newcombe Fellows—a number that will continue to grow as more and more Fellows enter the most productive phases of their careers.”

INVENTION TRANSFER GROUP FELLOWSHIP
Fellowships with the Invention Transfer Group (ITG) offer UCI graduate or professional students, or postdocs a hands-on introduction to university technology transfer and intellectual property management. Technology transfer is a mix of science, business and law. Under the direction of a Licensing Officer at ITG, fellows will assist in conducting technology assessments, prior art searches, writing invention summaries, and initiating market research of UCI inventions. This opportunity gives fellows experience analyzing innovative technologies, and an understanding of the patenting and commercialization processes, while providing an excellent resource to the UCI inventor community. This fellowship is part-time and paid.

The Center for Engaged Scholarship (CES) is pleased to announce that the application portal for this year’s fellowship awards is now open. We are planning to award at least five fellowships of $25,000 each for the 2019-2020 academic year.
Our dissertation fellowships are for Ph.D. students in the social sciences whose work is of high quality and that has the potential to contribute to making U.S. society more equal, more democratic, and more environmentally sustainable.
The CES fellowship is intended for Ph.D. students who have advanced to candidacy and are currently in their dissertation-writing phase. We welcome applicants from academic departments and programs in the social sciences, including history, and social science-focused interdisciplinary programs; we will not accept applications this time from students in education, public health and social work programs. We also seek a diverse pool of applicants in background and discipline.
We have a three-stage review of our fellowship applications to make sure that our awardees are doing excellent social science. Last year’s finalists were evaluated by eleven different people and over one hundred and fifty social science academics were involved in this review process.
Application deadline is Saturday, December 15, 2018.

MICKEY LELAND ENERGY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
For over 20 years, the Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program has provided students with opportunities to gain hands-on research experience with the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy (FE). This program has mentored hundreds of the best and brightest students from across the nation for future careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and provided insight into how the DOE is working to meet the energy challenges of the future.
Selected candidates will train under the mentorship of program officials and scientists working on focused research projects consistent with the FE mission. At the conclusion of the program, Fellows attend a “Technical Forum” where they will present their research findings and tour a nearby technical site.

The Lawrence Fellowship is a highly-competitive postdoctoral position at LLNL that is open to all technical disciplines. Fellowships are awarded to candidates with exceptional talent, scientific track records, and potential for significant achievements. Typically, two to four fellowships are awarded each year, and the awards are for three years. Fellows are free to pursue their own research agenda under the guidance of a senior staff scientist who serves as a mentor. The fellows most often conduct their research in a collaborative, multidisciplinary manner with others in a team environment.
DOE OFFICE OF SCIENCE GRADUATE STUDENTS (SCGSR) PROGRAM IS NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS - DEADLINE NOV 15
The goal of the program is to prepare graduate students for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission, by providing graduate thesis research opportunities at DOE laboratories. The SCGSR program provides supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to pursue part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE laboratory/facility in areas that address scientific challenges central to the Office of Science mission. The research opportunity is expected to advance the graduate students’ overall doctoral thesis while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the DOE laboratories/facilities.
The SCGSR program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science’s Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS), in collaboration with the 6 Office of Science research programs and the DOE national laboratories/facilities.
The SCGSR program provides supplemental funds for graduate awardees to conduct part of their thesis research at a host DOE laboratory/facility in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist within a defined award period. Collaborating DOE Laboratory Scientists may be from any of the participating DOE national laboratories/facilities. MERCK INNOVATION CUP - EUR 20,000 AWARD - DEADLINE JAN 31
From June 23 - 29, 2019, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany will be hosting the Merck Innovation Cup. The Innovation Cup is an initiative for graduate students in natural sciences, computer sciences, and business administration to attend a training program near Frankfurt, Germany.
All travel, food and accommodation expenses are paid.
The Innovation Cup is designed to support the professional development of graduate students interested in the pharmaceutical industry. Participants learn how R&D in the industry works by lectures from Merck managers and scientists. The students will also advance an idea to a full project plan with their teams. The event brings together a promising new generation of talent with senior Merck managers and researchers and accomplished Merck retirees in a meeting of the generations. It also provides a unique chance to network with the brightest students from all around the world. Teams will work on innovative projects in the areas of: Oncology, Immuno-Oncology, Autoimmunity, Small Molecule Drug Discovery, Protein Engineering and Screening, Digitalization.
Postdocs and graduate students on their way towards a PhD in biology, chemistry, physics, medicine, biotechnology, bioinformatics, computer sciences, data sciences, informatics, biochemistry, pharmacy, engineering or related fields are invited to apply. In addition, advanced MBA students or recent MBA graduates with an interest in the pharmaceutical business and a background in natural sciences are also eligible. The participating teams have the chance to win the Innovation Cup award endowed with EUR 20,000 for the most convincing project plan. At the last day of the Innovation Cup a scientific conference with alumni from previous editions will be organized.

The Rotary Global Grant Scholarships support graduate student academic and research endeavors in a foreign country. Awards are for $30,000 per year and students can receive multi-year awards. THE HORIZONS FELLOWSHIP - ROLLING DEADLINES
The Horizons Fellowship supports 10 outstanding university students in their pursuit to become leaders in technology. The program provides immersive software engineering and web/mobile development courses geared towards high-achieving college students. Students need not have a computer science background! Our curriculum, developed by ex-Salesforce and Optimizely engineers alongside PhDs in computer science, is designed to teach students how to build web, mobile, and desktop applications. We have 4-month semester programs and 3-month summer programs in cities across the U.S.
The Horizons Mentor Network includes current/past employees of firms such as Google, Facebook, Uber, Airbnb, Snapchat, and more. As a Horizons student/graduate, you will have permanent access to this exceptional group of mentors to help with career choices, general mentorship, and more.
Past Horizonites have come from a variety of schools and backgrounds. Students have hailed from Harvard, Princeton, UPenn/Wharton, Columbia, Northwestern, Brown, Michigan and more.
