Overview

Thinking about pursuing that great idea and turning it into a business?  How about leading a team, division or think tank within an existing organization?  Having the skillset to successfully innovate and lead in these scenarios is essential.

The UCI Master of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MIE) is the only program of its kind in the UC System, and provides extensive integrated and immersive academic and practical experience for students looking to embark on careers as entrepreneurs (innovating to form new companies) and intrapreneurs (innovating within existing companies). The program provides students with knowledge on core topics on the process of innovation and entrepreneurship, including identifying new venture opportunities through lean startup methodology, developing a business model, preparing a business plan, assembling a team, raising the necessary financing including venture capital, and launching a new business. It is also rich in experiential learning opportunities within the UC Irvine entrepreneurial ecosystem.

What Sets Us Apart?

The Master of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MIE) curriculum has been carefully crafted to first build a Foundation through focused coursework, then in the Winter quarter, it provides opportunities for Application of those foundational principles and tools, in the spring quarter, students focus on the Execution of the ideas and plans developed throughout the program. There are additional opportunities for experiential learning in an entrepreneurial company as well as curricular and co-curricular activities including workshops, speaker series, mentoring and company site visits.

Admissions Requirements

Admission to graduate standing in The Paul Merage School of Business is accorded to those possessing an undergraduate degree with an acceptable level of scholarship from an institution of recognized standing.  Applicants for admission will be evaluated on their academic record and potential for leadership as demonstrated in submitted application materials including:

Transcripts

Please upload unofficial copies of transcripts for each college and university attended with your online application. Transcripts scanned and uploaded to your application will be used to conduct the initial review. You will be asked to submit official transcripts if you are admitted and have decided to attend UCI.

Candidates may apply to the program if they hold the equivalent of a four-year US Bachelor's degree. Transcripts from non-US universities should include evidence of degree conferral (proof of graduation). International applicants should refer to the International Applicant page for more specific requirements.

Two Letters of Recommendation

Submissions of letters of recommendations are preferred using the form through our online system. However, letters received in the mail, will be accepted if received in a signed and sealed envelope directly from the recommender.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (international applicants)

The minimum score for admission is 80 for the Internet-based test. TOEFL scores are valid for up to two years from your test date. Applicants may receive a waiver of the TOEFL if all of the requirements for the high school diploma, bachelor’s degree or an advanced degree were completed in a country where the primary and dominant language is English and English was the language of instruction of the school. As an alternative to the TOEFL, you may also take the Academic Modules of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Pearson Test of English (PTE). For the IELTS, the minimum required score for admission is 7, with a score of no less than 6 on any individual module. The PTE minimum required score for admission is 53. Scores are valid for two years.

$150 Application Fee

The non-refundable application fee of $150 must be paid by credit card through the online application system.

Personal Interview (by invitation only)

Interviews are by invitation only, are required for admission, and are conducted by the Admissions Committee. The interview is a way for us to evaluate your interpersonal and communication skills, as well as a way for you to ask questions and determine whether the Merage School is right for you.

If invited to an interview, you will be informed via email. Whenever possible, applicants are encouraged to conduct interviews on campus. However, for those applicants unable to travel to Irvine, telephone interviews are acceptable. In some cases before an in-person or Skype interview, candidates may be invited to participate in a separate video interview. This is not an indication of an applicant's increased chances of admission, but rather an additional step we use to learn more about you.

We encourage applicants from all backgrounds, especially those who demonstrate strong communication and conceptual thinking skills.

Financial Support

Fellowships

All applicants are automatically considered for merit-based fellowships and are informed of any award upon admission. Criteria for fellowships include academic record (GPA), GMAT/GRE score, and work and leadership experience.

Federal and Private Loans

US citizens and permanent residents may apply for federal need-based financial aid in the form of student loans to cover all educational expenses including tuition, fees, room, board, books, travel and miscellaneous expenses up to the cost of attendance. In order to be considered for federal financial aid as a graduate student, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and request that your information be sent to the University of California, Irvine, school code 001314. Once you have received your Financial Aid Award Notification, you need to go to the UCI financial aid website and choose “Log on to My Aid” to complete the process. Learn more >

There are a number of lenders who provide private loans. UCI has developed a system-wide private loan lender list that is based solely on factors related to the borrower’s best interest. Teaching Assistantships

Teaching assistantships within the Merage School are reserved for our PHD students and second year Full-Time MBA students. Opportunities in assistantships for our first year Full-Time MBA students may exist in other departments on campus depending on your area of expertise.  Learn more >

There are several private loan options available for our international graduate students.
