Master of Engineering

Section 1

Overview

The Master of Engineering (M.Eng) program focuses on preparing graduates for employment in industries such as aerospace, biomedical, civil, computer science, electrical, environmental, materials, and mechanical. M.Eng trains students in the foundation, skills and practices of engineering in different concentrations and instills  skills that go beyond purely technical education. We prepare students to become leaders, whether technical managers in large companies or entrepreneurs starting their own enterprises. The program offers five concentrations in Biomedical Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Materials Science & Engineering, and Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering.

The M.Eng program will require students to acquire integrative knowledge of systems, as well as hands-on knowledge and experience in an applied domain through a capstone project. The program features entrepreneurship and leadership training for its students that sharpens their workplace skills and provides basic knowledge of product conception, development and launch.

What Sets Us Apart?

  • The Mission of the Samueli School of Engineering is to advance engineering discovery through the creation of original scholarship and research applied to societal grand challenges, to educate and train the next generation of global engineering innovators, and to provide a technological edge to industry by facilitating technology transfer and talent acquisition.
  • The Master of Engineering program is focused on preparing graduates for employment in a wide range of industries.
  • M.Eng features entrepreneurship and leadership training that sharpens students workplace skills and provides basic knowledge of product conception, development and launch.
  • The degree has a strong experiential learning component embodied in a capstone project that is supervised by faculty members. The capstone project provides students an opportunity to work on real-life problems with faculty and industry partners. The projects are comprehensive in scope, allowing students to demonstrate the breadth and depth of knowledge. The skill sets students gain can be applied across a broad range of industries.
  • Dedicated Career Services allow students to receive specialized and individualized guidance regarding professional opportunities. Integrated career center workshops focus on employment and career coaching.
  • Students have the opportunity to select their concentration/specialization:
    • Biomedical Engineering:
    • Civil & Environmental Engineering:
      • Structural & Earthquake Engineering
      • Water & Energy Nexus
    • Electrical Engineering & Computer Science:

Admissions Requirements

Materials needed for the graduate application include an official university transcript, letters of recommendation, GRE score, resume, and a Statement of Purpose where students can explain their relevant experience. Applicants will apply directly to The Samueli School’s Master of Engineering (M.Eng) under a concentration and will indicate a specialization. Applicants must meet any applicable prerequisite requirements for the specialization they wish to pursue. Admission to graduate standing in The Samueli School of Engineering is generally accorded to those possessing at least a B.S. degree in engineering or an allied field.

Financial Support

Financial packages are minimal and based on the competitive review process of the application materials; there are no separate aid applications required. Teaching assistant, research assistantships, and student employment are not available for students in this program.

All domestic students should fill out the FAFSA (Federal Application for Federal Student Aid) to become eligible for fellowships and to become eligible for loans, if necessary.
