Ecology and Evolutionary Biology MS

Overview

Ecology and evolutionary biology deals with the establishment of adaptations over evolutionary time and with the organismal function in ecological time. Research is conducted in both the laboratory and field and includes work on a variety of organisms from phages and bacteria, to higher plants and animals. Primary attention is given to evolutionary, ecological, and functional questions rather than to particular habitats or taxa. Faculty and graduate student research is often collaborative and interdisciplinary in approach. Departmental research activities include physiological ecology energetics, plant-herbivore and plant-pollinator interactions, microbial ecology and coevolution, quantitative genetics, life history evolution, population and reproductive ecology, community ecology and biogeography. These research endeavors provide a balance between empirical and theoretical approaches to evolutionary, organismal, and ecological problems.

Admissions Requirements

Applicants for this program should have a solid undergraduate program in biology and ecology, emphasizing both research and fieldwork. In addition, course work in statistics, mathematics, and physical and chemical sciences is expected.

Admission is restricted to initial enrollment in the fall quarter of each academic year. Applicants must submit a completed application form, copies of all postsecondary transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and results of the Graduate Record Examination General Test. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet-based Test (iBT) or a paper-based test (PBT) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required of all applicants whose primary language is not English.   Foreign applicants wishing to be considered for a first-year teaching assistant appointment must also submit results for one of the approved English proficiency exams (TSE, TOEFL iBT, IELTS or UCI Campus SPEAK exam).

Applications for admissions can be obtained through the Office of Graduate Studies home page. Applications and all supporting documents must be received by December 1 for admission the following fall quarter. Applicants are strongly encouraged to correspond directly with faculty who are conducting research in their areas of interest.

The non-refundable eTech Fee is required of all students and is used to support the maintenance and improvement of existing education technology, and new services and capabilities. The eTech fee is listed separately as the charged amount varies based on the amount of undergraduate units the student is enrolled in and is assessed later in the term than the other fees listed. The fee is $4 per unit of undergraduate lecture course, up to a maximum amount of $60 (or 15 units) per quarter. It will be assessed after the third week of instruction. The $60 eTech Fee included on this chart reflects the maximum possible fee.

† The Document Fee provides lifetime access to official transcripts and academic verifications without a fee for in-person pickup or delivery by USPS. In addition, there is no fee for mailing the initial diploma. Effective Fall 2018, new undergraduate, professional, and graduate students are assessed the one-time document fee. Eligible students are able to use financial aid to cover the Document Fee.
